First Frisco UMC has a long and rich heritage dating back to the mid-1800s. The church served the people of the North Texas frontier for more than fifty years before the city of Frisco even came into being. The church (Bethel Methodist) was founded in June 1848 by Rev. Joab Biggs and five charter members in the log home of William Rogers (two and one-half miles north of where downtown Frisco now stands).
As you can imagine, we have had many, many pastors in our more than 160 years. To see a complete listing of our pastors, please click here.
Bethel Church Brush Arbor
Bethel Methodist Church
1848 to 1902
The first church building was built in 1852. A second building was started in 1859. However, in the spring of 1860, before it was completed, this building was destroyed by a storm. This small congregation of sturdy pioneers started over again to build another building. This building was not completed until after the Civil War. It was used until 1882. In the early 1870's, the congregation constructed another building to be used as a school. In 1882, this building became the third house of worship for the Bethel Church. In February 1902, the Bethel Church moved to 6th and Oak in downtown Frisco and the name was changed to First Methodist Church.
In 1978, with the vision of continuing to serve effectively a community which would some day face significant population growth, the church purchased 7.17 acres of land at the present Preston Road site. Ground was broken and building plans were made. In August 1982, the Phase I building was occupied. A new Family Life Center was added during the 1990s.
In June of 2005, the church purchased 3.4 acres of land adjacent to the existing Preston Road site with plans to expand the existing campus and expand the worship and education facilities. And in December 2008, our new building was complete and opened! Our newest building includes a 600 seat Sanctuary, Gathering Area, Commercial Kitchen, Choir Space, and Youth Space.
In 2014 the church purchased six and a half acres north of the existing campus on Preston Road with plans of forming a land usage committee to envision and strategize about how best to utilize the additional property. Members strongly feel that in the long and distinguished history of this church there has never been a more exciting and promising time to make disciples for Jesus Christ.
